Whatever happened to John Hughes? As Richard Crenna would say, "it's over Johnny." Hughes might be dead, but when did his career die? Some people might think of the Home Alone movies as Hughes' last works, but he was still somewhat prolific as a writer for another ten years, often under the nom de plume Edmond Dantès. The 90s output (15 screenplays) was mostly mediocre at best, but Hughes will forever be remembered as the voice of the disaffected youth of generation X. Nevermind that Hughes was a baby boomer. Nor that he also wrote many kid movies and also dabbled in more serious fare.
It won't be reported this way, in size or in scope, but an argument could be made that John Hughes affected more people than Michael Jackson.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles were two of the best in that frequently derided decade of the 80s. And, while often forgotten, Uncle Buck was the best Macaulay Culkin movie by far. Which reminds me, whatever happened to Gaby Hoffmann?
